Relay For Life - International Community and Waterloo (EVENT)

Relay For Life is a festive and inspiring family event during which a whole community stands in solidarity with those touched by cancer while raising funds for the Foundation against Cancer.

During 24 hours, the International Community and Waterloo are mobilised to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, to remember loved ones lost to the disease and to fight back by raising awareness and funds. Relay For Life lasts 24 hours to signify that cancer never sleeps. For cancer patients, the fight does not stop because they are tired. For one night, relay participants do not stop either.

Relay For Life events took place for the first time more than 30 years ago. Today, they are organised in over 20 countries. In Belgium, the first three Relay For Life events took place in 2011; in 2019, there will be more than 30 events throughout the country.

All funds raised are donated to the Belgian Foundation against Cancer and are utilised to finance its mission: financial support for cancer research in Belgium, social support to patients and their families, promotion of healthy lifestyles, cancer prevention and screening, mobilisation of all available means in the fight against cancer.

During a Relay For Life, team members of all ages take turns walking or running around a track for 24 hours. It is not a race, but an invitation to go beyond one's limit to show support to those affected by the disease. During the 24 hours, participants and visitors enjoy live entertainment, wellness and sport activities. Food and refreshments are on offer throughout.

Cancer survivors, people who have battled cancer or are currently undergoing treatment, and their caregivers are the guests of honour at Relay For Life. They are invited to join other survivors in the Survivors Lounge at any time during Relay. A small separate program of events, as well as a reception and food (and quiet!), are available for them throughout.

Whether participants stay for the 24 hours, or visit and walk a few laps, all are invited to take part in the three ceremonies: Opening Ceremony on Sat 16/05 at 14:00, Luminaria Ceremony on Sat. 16/05 at 14:00 and the Closing Ceremony on Sun. 17/05 at 13:30.
